Current status of production

The rolling stock industries of Japan have a production of about 2115 rail cars per year in the total number, including varieties of cars such as high speed trains, EMU cars and locomotives, as shown in the Figure below. The EMU cars including high speed train cars account for almost 90% of the total number.

It have had an approximate turnover of 374 billion yen a year in average, based on the data for the past ten years. The turnover doesn’t include the data for the rail industrial sectors such as signal, maintenance, system integration, infrastructure and R&D. The exports have recently got to occupy around 38% in the total turnover.

According to the data as of 2009-04-01 illustrated in the Figure below, the total number of various rail cars used in revenue services amounts to around 67,000. In this total number, EMU cars such as the electric cars for both of the conventional and the Shinkansen lines occupy approximately 73%, which is a main feature of the rolling stock market in Japan.

Prospect of rolling stock industries

Railways are becoming to be re-evaluated as transportation friendly to environment. Railways will surely gain the momentum for the future development, only if they respond adequately to social needs and improves its performance as required. As railways have a bright future, so the rolling stock industries do.

In this context, JARI will continuously endeavor to contribute to developing further the rolling stock industries and, also, the whole railway industries.
